We spent a month in southern Greenland and had an amazing time visiting this quite remote destination. We had heard rumours of an amazing anchorage and were not disappointed by it. The supermarkets here are so well-stocked, which really surprised us, but there is one thing we just couldn’t find! And we also share the recipe for a great drink to make to celebrate a successful cold crossing.
Anchorages
Northbound in the Outer Hebrides
We arrived at the Outer Hebrides on the West coast of Scotland. This place has a lot of changing landscapes and seems a lot less populated. We visit East Tabert, Scalpay and Stornoway and see the historic standing stones and the opium castle of west Scotland.
Practical Stuff and Beautiful Light in Scotland
We have been quiet lately as we’ve been immersed in sailing life and busy provisioning and planning. We have sailed when it fitted the tide and slept light while anchoring so we have been a little groggy at times. We journeyed from Ballycastle to Oban. We have been enjoying Scotland’s majestic landscapes and people mixed with preparing for going north.
Ireland Winter Sailing – Thoughts and Resources
We had to sail back to Ballycastle to wait for the right weather to go to Scotland and continue North. But we put some of our resources in this post in case other people could find them useful. Ireland is definitely a fantastic place to sail and we
Exploring Scottish lochs in the Clyde
13th-19th January 2024 After leaving James Watt marina we headed for Loch Goil and went castle hunting. This is quite easy in Scotland as they are everywhere! The reason for the castle hunting was that …
Cast off – Kyle’s of Bute & Clyde Estuary
January 7th-12th 2024 On a sunny Sunday morning we finally Cast off the lines! It felt surreal and very unbelievable that we were finally leaving Portavadie harbour. We also learned that Danes and Brits have …
Sunset and Aurora in Hamarøy – Laundry in Herøya
Before Sarah returns to work in Copenhagen, we spent serene evenings at Hamarøy, savoring wine and whiskey, even catching the Northern Lights. At Herøya, we enjoyed cost-effective amenities and a spring clean. However, our boat’s seal leaked from intensive motoring and glacial silt, necessitating potential repairs in Norway.
We will take another night at Mariasundet before leaving Svalbard
On 10th August 2023, after leaving Barentsburg, we sailed to Mariasundet under sunny skies and mild conditions, opting for this location over windier southern regions. Despite forecasts for light wind, overnight gusts surprisingly reached over 30 knots, causing frequent anchor checks. Today, we’re holding steady in strong winds while Sarah serenades Steve with musicals in two languages, as we reminisce about sunsets.
A rest in Longyearbyen and a little trip to Bjonahamna
6th August 2023 It has been quite on here because we have been relaxing in Longyearbyen – well not really relaxing but shopping for going south, prepping the engine and waiting. We also had time to …
A nervous walk in London
With the Late Night watching the Bear it was a slow morning after having turned the day around again. We had a late breakfast and got our stuff together, so we could go look at London; an abandoned marble quarry established by the English only to find out that arctic marble crumbles when going South.
